Day 3-B: Drive along Straits of Juan de Fuca and Cape Flattery

We finished our hike at Ozette and jumped in the car to head north to the northern coast of Washington. We drove along the beautiful coastline of the Straits of Juan de Fuca. You could see over to Canada. The Canadian mountains peek out above the clouds if you look closely in the pics below.

We drove to the farthest western corner of the continental US, Cape Flattery, which is part of the Makah Indian Reservation. We hiked the .75 mile Cape Flattery Trail to the cliffs. The views were breath-taking!

The black things that look like they are floating in the water in the pic below are actually kelp.  They attache to the bottom of the ocean floor and grow upward to the surface.  We saw alot of them washed up on the shore up and down all the beaches we went to and they look like whips or chords...very strange plants.

After this we had a quick snack in the parking lot and headed back inland to Sol Duc.
